John F. Madajewski

John F. Madajewski has worked as Senior Engineer for the city of Decatur since 2002. He’s responsible for the operation of the Public Works engineering section, including development reviews, right-of-way permits, traffic-related matters, stream buffer variances and reviews, floodplain development permits, soil erosion and sedimentation control permitting and inspections, and the street resurfacing program. He received his BS in Civil Engineering from the Newark College of Engineering and his Masters in Sanitary Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

John developed an interest in woodworking while assisting his father-in-law in residential and industrial building construction and cabinet making on the weekends. He began wood turning with a lathe in 1998. His real joy is in finding unique local wood, mostly from Decatur, and turning to reveal the natural beauty of the grain and coloration of the wood.

His desire for recycling wood into a fine craft makes each piece unique, as he is not only saving space in landfills but giving back something special to the community, making the world a little greener. Each piece tells a story as he can tell you where the wood came from, where it was going, and what he did to save the wood and develop each piece to its perfected state. His goal is to recycle wood for its beauty and unique patterns. “My turnings are done to create pieces that are both functional and one-of-a-kind.”
